My sister, Michelle, accompanied Dennis and I to UCSF yesterday. It was nice to have her with us for moral support, and to have another set of ears to listen to all the information we try to digest from these appointments.
Dennis had a follow-up CT scan and 90 minutes later we met with Dr Corvera. Good news, his liver is growing! That was encouraging to hear. We got to see some 3-D images of the mapping of his liver done on May 8th, the day before his procedure to embolize the portal vein on the right side of his liver. The 3-D technology is pretty incredible. It's like watching a movie, but, knowing it's your own liver, arteries, etc
The first time we met with Dr Corvera (vitually) he gave Dennis a tentative date of June 29th for surgery. It looks like it will more likely be in July. We should be hearing from the surgery scheduler tomorrow or early next week with a set date. I will give that date on the next post.
Some of the information we learned at yesterday's appointment with Dr Corvera is that the surgery is estimated to take 10 hours. He should plan on staying in the hospital for 7-10 days. It just depends how Dennis does since it's a very complicated surgery. His recovery should take 2-3 months. Dennis was happy to have an estimate of time to go back to work. It gives him something to look forward to.
Tomorrow, Dennis is going to the oncologist's office in San Luis Obispo to have an orientation on chemo therapy. He will go in 2 times next week for IV chemo. Dr Corvera wants him to have a couple of chemo sessions before surgery, and more, after. Later tomorrow, Dennis will have a PET scan.
